Beppu Bamboo, in Kyushu’s Oita prefecture of Japan, is renowned for its living tradition of bamboo weaving. Produced using the prefecture’s high-quality madake, found predominantly around Beppu City, artists transform bamboo into exquisite objects using tools and techniques that for centuries are still being passed down from masters to their apprentices. The Beppu Bamboo flower vases—woven cylinders of bamboo—are encased in a rectangular vase of clear acrylic and demonstrate a juxtaposition of traditional production techniques with contemporary aesthetics. The woven trays further exemplify the expert craftsmanship, exhibiting complicated weaving patterns which distort and deconstruct traditional forms.
